You know, that European desserts, them things are somethin’ else. I heard they got all sorts of fancy names and what not. But I tell ya, they ain’t nothin’ like a good ol’ pie, you know what I mean? Still, I reckon some of ’em are worth a try.
Like that, uh, what’s it called? Tiramasu? Sounds like some kinda disease, don’t it? But folks say it’s good. They say it’s from Italy. You know, that place shaped like a boot. I seen it on the TV once. They got layers of coffee and cream and some kinda ladyfingers. I don’t know what ladyfingers are. Sounds a bit odd, don’t it? But my neighbor, she tried it once, said it was the best thing she ever tasted.
And then there’s that apple crumble thing. Heard it was the most popular. Now, that I can get behind. Apples, I know apples. We used to have an apple tree in our backyard. My old man, bless his soul, he’d make the best apple pies from ’em. This crumble thing, it’s just apples with some kinda crumbly stuff on top. I guess it’s like a lazy pie, you know? Less work. Don’t gotta roll out no dough.
They say these European desserts, they take ya on a trip. Like, one bite and you’re in a different country. Well, I ain’t never been to no Europe, but I reckon good food is good food, no matter where it’s from. My grandbaby, she showed me pictures of these fancy cakes and pastries. All covered in chocolate and fruit and cream. They look mighty pretty, I gotta say.
They got this one thing, it’s like a little cake, all covered in chocolate. They call ’em… uh… Molly-koos? No, that ain’t right. Macaroons! That’s it. Macaroons. They come in all sorts of colors. Like a rainbow. Look a little too fancy for me, but I bet they taste alright.
- Tiramisu – That coffee thing from Italy.
- Apple Crumble – Like a lazy apple pie.
- Macaroons – Them little colorful cakes.
I remember once, my sister, she went to France. That’s in Europe, you know. She brought back these little cookies. Said they were made with almonds. They were kinda crunchy, and sweet. She said they were called… oh, what were they called? Something fancy. Can’t remember. But they were good.
Now, I’m more of a pie and cake kinda gal. But these European desserts, they got me thinkin’. Maybe I should try somethin’ new. My grandbaby, she’s always tryin’ new things. Maybe I should be more like her. She says these European desserts are easy to make. You don’t need nothing too fancy. Just basic stuff. Maybe she’s right.
One time, I saw a lady on the TV, she was makin’ some kind of European dessert. It was like a… a flat cake. With fruit on top. Looked kinda like a pizza, but sweet. They called it a… a tart. That’s it. A tart. She put all kinds of fruit on it. Strawberries, blueberries, peaches. Looked real pretty. And tasty. Maybe I’ll try makin’ one of them.
This whole European dessert thing makes me think about my momma. She used to bake a lot. Mostly just simple stuff, like this dessert. She always said the best desserts were the ones made with love. And I think she was right. Don’t matter if it’s a fancy European dessert or a simple apple pie, if it’s made with love, it’s gonna be good.
I guess folks all over the world like sweet things. It’s just a human thing, ain’t it? We all like a little somethin’ sweet to make us feel good. And these European desserts, they seem to do the trick.
But ya know, at the end of the day, give me a good ol’ piece of apple pie any day. With a scoop of ice cream, of course. Can’t beat that. Still, them European desserts, they’re somethin’ to think about. Maybe I’ll try bakin’ one. Sometime. When I get the gumption.
This lady on the internet, she said you can make these things easy. And that most folks in America are able to try ’em. Said the stuff you need to make ’em ain’t hard to find. I reckon that’s a good thing.
I seen another show, they was talkin’ about desserts from all over. They had one from, I think it was called Spain. It was like a… a fried dough thing. Covered in sugar. They called it a… a churro. That’s it. A churro. Looked mighty tasty. They dipped it in chocolate. Now that’s somethin’ I could get behind. Fried dough and chocolate? What’s not to like? And Spain is in Europe, my grandbaby told me. So, I guess that’s another one of them European desserts. I told her, there sure are a lot of desserts in Europe. She just laughed.
These here desserts, you know, they are like a little vacation. Just a bite and you feel like you are somewhere else. I guess that’s why folks like ’em so much. I still like my pie, but maybe I will try some more of these here European things. You never know, maybe I find a new favorite. You only live once, right? Might as well try all the sweets you can. I’ll ask my grandbaby to help. She knows all about this stuff. She can show me how it is done. Then maybe I can make some for the church social. Everyone will be so surprised. They will say “Where did you get this recipe?” I will say “Oh, it’s just a little something from Europe.”
