Okay, so yesterday I got this idea to make a big breakfast for the family. You know, something more than just the usual toast and eggs. I was digging through the pantry and found a loaf of sourdough bread that I baked a few days ago. It was still good, but I thought, “Why not make something special with it?” That’s when I decided to try making a sourdough bread French toast casserole.
First off, I grabbed that loaf of sourdough and sliced it up into thick pieces. I mean, you gotta have those hearty slices to soak up all the good stuff later. Then I greased up a big casserole dish. I think it was about 9×13 inches, but honestly, I just grabbed the one that looked big enough to hold all the bread.
Next, I whisked together a bunch of eggs, some milk, and a good splash of vanilla extract in a big bowl. Oh, and I threw in a pinch of cinnamon too, because why not? It makes everything smell like a bakery in here. I laid the bread slices in the casserole dish, overlapping them a bit. You want to make sure they all fit snugly in there.
- Crack a bunch of eggs into a bowl
- Pour in some milk
- Add vanilla extract
- Sprinkle in cinnamon
- Whisk it all together
Then came the fun part – I poured that eggy mixture all over the bread. I made sure every single piece got a good soaking. I even poked the bread a bit with a fork to help it absorb all that liquid. At this point, I was getting pretty excited. I love how the sturdy nature of sourdough bread makes it a great option for French * won’t be soggy.
I covered the dish with some plastic wrap and popped it in the fridge. I let it sit there overnight. The waiting was the hardest part, you know? But it’s worth it because the bread gets all soft and soaked through with that delicious custard.
This morning, I preheated the oven to 350 degrees. While that was heating up, I took the casserole out of the fridge and sprinkled some brown sugar on top. Just a little, not too much, but enough to give it a nice sweet crust.
Baking Time!
I baked it for about 45 minutes. You’ll know it’s done when it’s all golden brown and puffy. The smell was amazing, seriously. My family was already at the table by the time I pulled it out of the oven.
We served it up with some maple syrup and fresh berries. And let me tell you, it was a hit! The sourdough bread added this awesome tangy flavor that you don’t get with regular bread. It was soft and custardy on the inside and had a nice little crunch on top. Everybody loved it, even the little ones, and they can be picky eaters!
So, that’s my little kitchen adventure from this weekend. It was so easy to make, and it felt like a real treat. If you’ve got some sourdough lying around, you should totally give this a try. Trust me, you won’t regret it! It’s the perfect breakfast for a lazy weekend morning or when you want to impress your family with something a bit more special than usual.
