Okay, so I’ve been getting into dessert wines lately – you know, the sweet stuff you have after a big meal. And I realized, I’ve been drinking them out of regular wine glasses. That can’t be right, can it?
So I started digging around. First, I just grabbed all the different glasses I had in my cupboards. We’re talking regular wine glasses, some smaller cordial glasses my grandma gave me, even a couple of those tiny shot glasses.
Then, I picked up a few different dessert wines. I got a bottle of Sauternes, a late-harvest Riesling, and some ice wine (because, why not?).
The Experiment Begins!
I poured a little bit of each wine into each type of glass. Honestly, it looked kind of ridiculous, all these different glasses lined up.
- Regular Wine Glasses: The wine tasted okay, but the smell, you know, the “aroma,” was kind of weak. It felt like I was missing something.
- Grandma’s Cordial Glasses: These were better! The smaller size seemed to concentrate the smell, which made the wine taste richer.
- Shot Glasses: Okay, this was a bad idea. Way too small. It was hard to swirl the wine and get a good sniff, and it felt like I was just doing shots of dessert wine. Not classy.
After messing around with my own glasses, I figured I should see what the “experts” say. So I did some searching online. It said you want something smaller than a regular wine glass, with a narrower opening. This helps trap those sweet, intense aromas.
Then I went to a local wine shop and browsed what glassware they have, asked some questions to a shop assistant. I even took a picture of the glasses I am interested in, to remember their shapes and sizes. After that, I went back home, and searched online to compare the prices and get one!
I finally ordered some tulip-shaped glasses online, they seemed like a good middle ground. They were smaller than my regular wine glasses, but not as tiny as the cordial glasses. And the shape seemed right – kind of narrow at the top, but with enough room to swirl.
When the new glasses arrived, I tried them out immediately. And wow, what a difference! The aromas were so much more intense, and the wine just tasted…better. It was like a whole new level of flavor.
So, lesson learned: glassware matters! Don’t use shot glasses for dessert wine. And get yourself some proper glasses – it’s worth it!
