Well, let me tell ya somethin’, folks. Jesus, He sure knew how to make a point when He sat down at the meal table. I ain’t talkin’ about just chattin’ and munchin’ on bread, no sir! He used them meals to teach us lessons that go way deeper than just fillin’ your belly. You know, after they finished eatin’, He told them Apostles somethin’ real important. He said, “You should love one another just like I loved you.” Now, if you do that, people’s gonna know you belong to me, He says. Now ain’t that somethin’ to think on? Jesus wasn’t just talkin’ about regular love; He was talkin’ about real, true love, the kind that don’t keep no record of wrongs, the kind that always forgives and never gives up. You gotta love like that if you wanna show the world you’re His disciple.
Now, there’s somethin’ special about sittin’ down at a meal together. You see, the table ain’t just for eatin’. It’s for connectin’, for bein’ with folks, and for sharin’ what you got. Jesus knew that. You can tell a lot about people by who they eat with, can’t ya? When Jesus sat at the table with folks, He wasn’t choosy. He didn’t care if they were rich or poor, high or low. He ate with folks others would look down on. He dined with sinners, He ate with the outcasts, and He didn’t mind one bit. Some people didn’t like that. They thought, “Why’s He sittin’ with them?” But Jesus didn’t care, did He? He was there to teach love, forgiveness, and acceptance.
In Luke 14:1-24, it’s clear Jesus used them meals to teach more than just how to chew your food. He was sittin’ with the Pharisees, you know the folks that thought they had all the rules figured out. Jesus wasn’t shy about shockin’ them. He healed a man right there on the Sabbath, when they thought you couldn’t do no work on the Sabbath. And that’s when He told ‘em somethin’ real powerful: Don’t just invite folks to your dinner table who can invite ya back. Don’t invite the ones who got money and can pay ya back. Invite the poor, the sick, the ones who can’t give ya nothin’ in return. Now that’s somethin’ that don’t come easy, I tell ya. But Jesus wasn’t about doin’ what’s easy, He was about showin’ us how to love like He does.
Then there’s that time when He dined with the enemy—yep, in Luke 5:27-32. The Pharisees didn’t like it one bit, but Jesus told ‘em, “I didn’t come to save the folks who think they got it all together. I came for the sick, for the ones who need help, the ones who don’t have it all figured out.” That’s the kind of love Jesus showed. He didn’t care about where you came from, what you did, or who you were. He wanted to show you a new way of livin’ and lovin’ others. And that’s what He did, right there at the table.
Now, this whole meal thing—ya gotta understand, it ain’t just about eatin’. The meal table is where they saw Him for who He really was. In Luke 24:36-43, after He had risen from the dead, Jesus appeared to His disciples and ate with ‘em. He showed ‘em His hands and His feet. He ate a piece of fish right there in front of ‘em to prove He was really alive. It was at that table, at that meal, where they finally understood. Jesus was revealed to them in the most ordinary of places—right there at the table. Ain’t that somethin’?
Now, in our everyday life, we don’t always think about the power of a meal. But Jesus did. He made sure that no matter where He was, the table was a place of teachin’, of sharin’, and of love. And the best part? He’s saved us all a seat at His table, the Communion table. When we sit at that table, we remember His sacrifice, and we give thanks for what He did for us. And when we do that, we’re promised somethin’ mighty precious—inner peace and satisfaction that don’t come from no fancy food or rich livin’. It comes from knowin’ Him and His love.
So next time you’re sittin’ at the table with your loved ones, or even strangers, think about what it means. It ain’t just a place for eatin’. It’s a place to show love, to connect with folks, and to teach and learn from each other. Just like Jesus did. So don’t be shy, share what you got, invite folks in, and make your table a place of love and grace, just like He did.
