Okay, let’s talk about these Frontera frozen meals. Been seeing them around for a while, figured I’d finally give them a shot.
Getting Started
So, I was in the grocery store, you know, doing the usual run. Staring into the abyss of the freezer section, trying to decide what quick meals to grab for those nights I just don’t feel like cooking from scratch. Happens more often than I’d like to admit these days. My eyes landed on the Frontera packaging. Looked a bit more upscale than the usual frozen stuff, maybe? Decided, what the heck, let’s grab a couple.
I picked up two different ones, I think one was a chicken something bowl, maybe Tinga? And another one, probably beef barbacoa. The boxes felt pretty solid, not flimsy.
The Actual Trying Part
Got home, life happened, and a few days later I needed something fast. Remembered the Frontera meals chilling in the freezer. Pulled out the chicken one. Looked at the back, instructions seemed simple enough – standard microwave routine. Poke holes, nuke it for a bit, stir, nuke it some more. Easy peasy.
So, I did just that. Poked the film cover with a fork. Slid it into the microwave. Punched in the time. Waited. The smell starting to fill the kitchen wasn’t bad, actually. Kinda smelled like actual food, which is a plus for frozen meals, right?
Ding! Pulled it out. Let it sit for a minute like the box said – always gotta follow that part, learned that the hard way before. Peeled back the film.
How’d It Go Down?
Looked alright. Not exactly like the picture on the box, never is, is it? But you could see chunks of chicken, some rice, beans, corn maybe? Gave it a good stir. Grabbed a fork and dug in.
And you know what? It wasn’t half bad. Seriously. The chicken wasn’t rubbery, which is a big win. The sauce had some actual flavor, a little bit of spice, but not overwhelming. Everything tasted pretty distinct; it wasn’t just a mush of flavors like some frozen meals can be.
- Chicken was tender.
- Sauce had a nice kick.
- Rice and beans were cooked fine.
Ate the whole thing. Felt pretty satisfied afterwards, not stuffed, but definitely like I’d eaten a decent little meal. Was it like going to a nice Mexican restaurant? No, of course not. It’s a frozen meal from a box. But for what it was – a quick, convenient microwave dinner – it definitely punched above its weight class compared to a lot of others I’ve tried.
Still got that beef one in the freezer. Probably try it next week when I hit another lazy evening. Based on the chicken one, I’m actually kinda looking forward to it. If you see ’em, maybe worth picking one up to try for yourself. Quick, easy, and tasted pretty decent. Can’t ask for much more from the freezer aisle sometimes.
