Okay, so I saw this thing on the internet about using a projector for cookie decorating and I was like, “No way, that’s genius!” I had to try it myself. Seriously, my handwriting on cookies is usually a disaster. Think “doctor’s prescription” bad.

Getting Started
First, I grabbed my old projector – the one I used for presentations back in the day. It was gathering dust, so this was a perfect excuse to bring it back to life. Then, I baked a batch of sugar cookies. I used my go-to recipe, the one that always makes nice, flat cookies perfect for decorating.
The Setup
Once the cookies were cool, I whipped up some royal icing. I made it a bit on the thicker side, figuring it would be easier to work with. I divided the icing into a few different bowls and tinted them with food coloring. Basic stuff – red, blue, green, you know the drill.
Next, I found an image I wanted to use online. I’d be better find a simple one. So, I chose a basic heart shape to start.I connected my laptop to the projector and displayed the image on the wall. That sounds easy.
The Tricky Part (aka The Fun Part)
Here’s where it got interesting. I carefully positioned a cookie under the projected image. It took a little adjusting to get the size and placement just right. Then, using a piping bag, I traced the outline of the image onto the cookie with the royal icing.
- Tip: It’s way easier if you dim the lights in the room. Makes the projected image sharper.
It wasn’t perfect the first time, not gonna lie. My hand was a little shaky, and the icing consistency wasn’t quite right at first. But after a couple of practice runs, I started to get the hang of it. It’s kind of like drawing with light…but with sugar!
The Results
After I outlined all the cookies, I let them dry for a bit. Then I went back and filled in the designs with different colors. The projector made it super easy to stay within the lines – which, again, is usually a huge struggle for me.
Honestly, the finished cookies looked pretty amazing! Way better than anything I could have done freehand. It was like having a professional cookie decorator magically living in my kitchen. I would totally do this again, especially for a party or special occasion. It’s a fun little project, and the results are worth it!
