Now, listen up, folks. If y’all want to make some fish food for them little water critters, it ain’t too hard. I been makin’ fish food for years, and it’s as simple as bakin’ a pie. You just gotta know what to put in it, and you can make somethin’ that’ll make them fish swim around like they’re in heaven.
First thing’s first, you need somethin’ good for ’em to eat. I usually go for canned salmon. That stuff’s the best, especially if you’re tryin’ to breed your fish. But you ain’t gotta stick to just that. Any fish fillet will do, really. Shrimp, chicken, or lean beef work too. I even throw in some chicken hearts or chicken livers when I got ’em, and that works wonders. If you ain’t got fresh stuff, don’t fret. Canned tuna’s just fine—just be sure to drain that water out first. Now, some folks like to add fish meal or krill meal to the mix. I can’t say I’m much for fancy stuff, but I hear it’s mighty good for the fish.
Now, if you wanna take it a step further, I’ll tell ya what I do. I get me some fresh scallops and use ‘em in the mix. They’re real soft, and them fish sure do love ‘em. You can get those at the store if you’re lucky, but sometimes you gotta get what you can find. Fresh is always better, but if you got some frozen fish or shrimp, that’s fine too.
Once you’ve got your main ingredients, you need to mash it all up. You can use a food processor if you got one, or you can just mash it by hand. I like to make sure it’s real fine, so them little fish can eat it up easy. I also add a little bit of water, just so it sticks together better, but not too much. You don’t want it too wet or it’ll just fall apart when you try to feed it to ‘em.
Next thing you’ll need is some kind of binder to hold it all together. A lotta folks use gelatin, but I just use a bit of flour sometimes, ‘cause it’s what I got around. It don’t matter too much, as long as it helps keep everything from fallin’ apart. You mix that all up real good, and then it’s time to shape it. I usually make little patties or sticks, but you can make it however you want. Just make sure they’re small enough for them fish to eat.
Once you’ve got your fish food all shaped up, you can freeze it. Just pop it on a tray and stick it in the freezer for a few hours. When it’s nice and solid, you can store it in a bag or container and pull out just what you need when it’s feedin’ time. You can keep it in the freezer for a good while, too, so don’t worry about it goin’ bad.
And that’s all there is to it! Simple, right? Now, you got yourself some good homemade fish food, and you can feel good knowin’ that you made it yourself. No need to go spendin’ a lot of money on that store-bought stuff when you can make it at home, and it’ll probably be better for the fish too.
Just remember to keep the fish food fresh, and feed ‘em regularly. They’ll be swimmin’ around happy as can be, and you’ll feel proud of your work. Don’t forget, every now and then you can mix things up, add some different ingredients, and see what your fish like best. They might surprise you!
