Well, let me tell you about this “Greek breakfast” thing. It ain’t like the grits and bacon I’m used to, that’s for sure. But them Greeks, they got their own way of doin’ things, and their breakfast ain’t half bad.
First off, they got this yogurt. Not the sweet, fruity kind you find in them city stores. This here is Greek yogurt, thick and creamy like. They slather it with honey and toss in some walnuts. Sounds kinda fancy, but it’s real fillin’. Keeps you goin’ all mornin’, you know, ’cause you gotta work hard, no matter where you are or what you eat.
- Yogurt with Honey and Nuts: Like I said, thick yogurt, honey, and walnuts. Simple and good.
- Bread and Cheese: They got all sorts of bread, fresh baked, sometimes with that crumbly feta cheese or them salty olives on top. Not bad if you like that kinda thing.
Then there’s them pies. Not sweet pies like apple or cherry. These here are savory pies, filled with spinach or cheese. They call ’em spanakopita and tiropita. Sounds like somethin’ you’d hear on the TV, but they’re mighty tasty. My grand kids would probably like it, all cheesy and warm and stuff. I reckon it’s good for ’em too, all that spinach and stuff.
And don’t forget the fruit. They got all kinds, dependin’ on the time of year. Oranges, figs, whatever’s growin’. Fresh and sweet, a nice change from all that heavy bread and cheese and pies.
Now, them Greeks, they like their coffee strong. Greek coffee, they call it. It’s thick and muddy, like somethin’ you’d dig up from the garden. But it’ll wake you up faster than a rooster crowin’. They also drink tea, sometimes with herbs and stuff. And the kids, they get milk or chocolate, just like kids everywhere.
Sometimes they have these scrambled eggs, Greek style. They put all sorts of stuff in ’em, veggies and cheese and whatnot. Makes ’em a bit more interestin’ than plain old eggs, I guess. You can add all sorts of things to eggs, you know. Whatever you got in the garden, just throw it in. That’s what my ma used to do.
For somethin’ quick and easy, they got these breakfast pitas. Flatbread stuffed with whatever you like, eggs, cheese, veggies. Kinda like a sandwich, but not quite. Good for eatin’ on the go, if you ain’t got time to sit down and enjoy your yogurt and honey.
So, that’s the Greek breakfast in a nutshell. A bit different from what I’m used to, but hearty and fillin’ all the same. Gets you ready for a long day of workin’ in the fields…or whatever them Greeks do all day. It’s all the same, workin’ is workin’, and eatin’ is eatin’, no matter where you are. You gotta have good food to keep you goin’, and the Greeks seem to have figured that out.
One thing’s for sure, they sure do like their food. And they ain’t afraid to try new things. Maybe that’s why they’re always so happy and full of energy. Or maybe it’s just all that sunshine they get. Either way, they got a good thing goin’ with this Greek breakfast business.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m gonna go make myself some grits and bacon. All this talk of yogurt and feta cheese is makin’ me hungry for somethin’ familiar.
