Okay, so I’ve always loved those beautifully decorated cookies you see online, the ones that look almost too good to eat. I finally decided to take the plunge and try a cookie decorating class. It was a blast! Let me tell you all about it.

First, I searched around for local classes. I found a few options, checked out their websites, and looked at pictures of cookies from past classes. I picked one that looked fun and fit my schedule.
When I got to the class, everything was already set up. We had plain sugar cookies in different shapes, tons of different colored icing bags, and sprinkles galore! It was a little overwhelming, but in a good way.
Getting Started
The instructor, she was super friendly, started by showing us the basics. We learned how to hold the icing bags, how much pressure to use, and how to make simple lines and dots. My first few attempts were… well, let’s just say they weren’t pretty. My lines were wobbly, and my dots were more like blobs.
- Practice, practice, practice: We spent a good chunk of time just practicing on parchment paper. This was so helpful. I started to get the hang of controlling the icing flow.
- Outline and flood: We learned the “outline and flood” technique. You basically make an outline with thicker icing, then fill it in with thinner icing. This gives the cookies that smooth, professional look.
- Adding details: Once the base icing was dry, we added details with different colors and sprinkles. This is where you could really get creative!
My Cookie Creations
I started with a simple heart-shaped cookie. I outlined it in pink, flooded it with white, and then added some tiny pink dots around the edge. It wasn’t perfect, but it was a huge improvement from my first wobbly lines!
Feeling a bit bolder, I moved on to a flower-shaped cookie. I used yellow for the center, then different shades of purple for the petals. I even added some green “leaves” with a leaf-shaped piping tip. This one I was pretty proud of!
By the end of the class, I had a whole box of decorated cookies. Some were better than others, but I was amazed at how much I’d learned in just a few hours. It was such a fun and relaxing experience, and I can’t wait to try decorating more cookies at home. Plus I have some nice cookies that I created by myself.
