Well, if y’all been wonderin’ what to do with some white beans and a bit o’ basil, I got a simple little recipe for ya right here. Don’t need much fuss, just a few ingredients, and it’ll fill yer belly right up. I reckon anyone can do it, even if ya ain’t much of a cook.
First thing’s first, get yer hands on some white beans. Now, if ya got canned white beans sittin’ in the cupboard, well that’s fine, just make sure to drain ‘em and give ‘em a good rinse. If you got dried beans, you’ll need to soak ‘em overnight and cook ‘em up before ya start. Either way, you’ll need about 2 cups of beans when all is said and done.
Now, as for the basil, fresh is best. I always say, fresh herbs make a world o’ difference in the taste. So, grab ya a good cup o’ fresh basil leaves. If you can’t find fresh, well I reckon you could use dried, but it ain’t quite the same. Fresh basil gives it that nice, sharp flavor that’ll make ya wonder why you ain’t been usin’ it more often.
Here’s what you need to do:
- Take yer beans, whether canned or cooked, and throw ‘em into a big pot or a deep skillet. Don’t worry about fancy cookin’ pots, anything that’ll hold them beans will do.
- Next, rip up that basil and toss it in with the beans. If you wanna chop it fine, that’s fine, but I just like to tear it with my hands. Ain’t nobody got time to be fancy.
- Now, you’ll need to add a good splash of olive oil. Not too much, but enough to give it a nice little sheen. A couple tablespoons should do the trick.
- Then, get ya some garlic. If you got fresh, chop up a couple cloves, or if you don’t feel like doin’ all that, just use some garlic powder. Toss it in with the beans and basil.
- Give it all a good stir, and then add a little salt and pepper to taste. Don’t go overboard, but make sure it’s seasoned right. The beans will soak up that good flavor, and the basil will make it smell just wonderful.
Once that’s all in the pot, you’ll want to turn the heat up to medium. Let it cook for about 10 to 15 minutes, stirrin’ it every so often. You don’t wanna let it burn, but you do want to let the flavors come together real nice.
Now, this here can be a meal all on its own, but if you want to make it a little more hearty, you can add some pasta or rice to go with it. That’s right, serve it up on top of some noodles or with a big bowl of rice. It’ll fill ya up good.
And, if you’re feelin’ real fancy, you can throw in a little grated Parmesan on top, just to make it look all nice. But I ain’t gonna say ya have to do that, ‘cause this here is just a simple, homey dish. It’s good with a side of cornbread or maybe a slice o’ that homemade rustic bread, too. Don’t forget to serve it warm, that’s the best way to enjoy it.
Tips for ya:
- If ya want a little more flavor, you can add a squeeze of lemon juice or even some lemon zest to brighten things up.
- For a little more protein, try adding some chopped up chicken or sausage. But don’t worry, it’s plenty good on its own, too.
- Sometimes I like to add a handful of spinach or kale for a little extra green in there. Don’t hurt none!
So, there ya go, folks. A simple recipe for stewed white beans with basil that’ll make you feel right at home. It’s quick, it’s easy, and it’s tasty—just the way we like it. Hope y’all enjoy it as much as I do!
