Okay, so I saw this thing online about making desserts, and there was this one with a lattice top. I’ve never done anything like that before, but it looked cool, so I figured, why not give it a shot?
First, I had to find a recipe. I just Googled “dessert with lattice” and a bunch of stuff popped up. Mostly pies, which makes sense. I picked an apple pie one because, well, who doesn’t like apple pie?
Getting Started
The recipe seemed simple enough. Make a crust, make a filling, then do the lattice thingy. I started with the crust. Flour, butter, some water… the usual. I’m not gonna lie, my dough-making skills are, like, a 5 out of 10. It usually comes out okay, but it’s never gonna win any awards.
- Flour… check.
- Butter… check. (Cold, like the recipe said!)
- Water… check.
I mixed it all up, and it looked like dough, so that was a good start. I wrapped it in plastic wrap (cling film, whatever you call it) and stuck it in the fridge. The recipe said to chill it, so I did.
The Filling
Next up, the apple filling. I peeled and sliced a bunch of apples. That took a while, I gotta say. My knife skills aren’t exactly chef-level. Then I tossed them with sugar, cinnamon, and some other spices. It smelled amazing, I’m not gonna lie.
Lattice Time
Okay, this was the scary part. I rolled out half the dough and put it in the pie dish. Then I poured in the apple filling. It looked pretty good, even without the fancy top.
Then I rolled out the other half of the dough. The recipe said to cut it into strips. So I did, using a pizza cutter because I couldn’t find a pastry wheel. They weren’t perfectly even, but hey, rustic charm, right?
Now, the weaving. I’d watched a video online, and it looked easy. It… wasn’t. I laid some strips across the pie, then I tried to weave the other strips over and under. It was a mess at first. Dough kept breaking, strips were too thick or too thin… I almost gave up.
But I kept going. I pinched the edges together, brushed the top with some egg wash (because the recipe said to), and stuck it in the oven.
The Result
It baked for, like, an hour. The house smelled incredible. When I took it out, the lattice wasn’t perfect. Some parts were thicker than others, and it wasn’t exactly symmetrical. But you know what? It looked pretty good! And it tasted even better. Warm apple pie with a slightly wonky but still crispy lattice top? Heck yeah.
So, would I do it again? Probably. It was a bit of a pain, but the end result was worth it. Maybe next time I’ll get a pastry wheel and practice my dough-cutting skills. Or maybe I’ll just buy a pie crust. We’ll see.
