Alright, let’s talk about this here chicken soup, you know, the kind that warms your belly and makes you feel all cozy inside. Folks call it all sorts of things, but to me, it’s just good ol’ chicken soup.
What’s in this chicken soup, anyway? Well, it ain’t rocket science, I tell ya. First, you gotta get yourself a chicken, a good one, not some scrawny thing. Clean it up real good, none of that feathery business. Then dump it in a big pot, cover it with water, cold water mind you, and let it boil. That’s how you start.
Then, you start addin’ stuff. Some folks put in chicken wings, I guess for extra flavor, more chickeny taste. Onions, gotta have onions, makes it smell good and taste good too. Sweet potatoes, parsnips – if you got ‘em, throw ‘em in. Some folks like carrots, celery, all sorts of things. It’s really up to you, what you got in the garden or what’s on sale at the store. No need to get fancy, just use what you got.
Now, some people, they make a big fuss about this soup. They talk about it like it’s some kinda magic potion. Say it can cure your cold or flu. Well, I don’t know about all that, but I do know it makes you feel better when you’re under the weather. When you got a stuffy nose, that hot soup, it kinda loosens things up, you know? And if your throat’s scratchy, the salt in the broth, it soothes it right down.
Someone told me some doctors, or whatever, they say the soup has anti-something stuff, anti-flam-a-tory, yeah, that’s it. Makes the swelling go down. I ain’t no doctor, but I reckon it’s the warmth and the good stuff in the vegetables that help you feel better. It ain’t gonna cure you overnight, but it sure does make you feel a whole lot better.
- First, get a good chicken and clean it.
- Put the chicken in a big pot with cold water and boil it.
- Add onions, sweet potatoes, parsnips, or whatever you like.
- Let it simmer for a good long while, till the chicken is cooked and the vegetables are soft.
- Eat it up while it’s hot!
I heard tell of some folks, way over in Korea or someplace, they got their own kind of chicken soup. They use some special kinda chicken, black bones and all. Sounded mighty strange to me, but I guess everyone’s got their own way of doin’ things. They eat the chicken, then they take the rice and stuffin’ and mix it all together in the broth. Sounds messy, but I bet it’s good eatin’. They don’t think of it as just soup, though, more like a whole meal. Fancy folks, I guess.
There was some young fella, singin’ a song about chicken noodle soup. A rapper, they called him. Now I don’t know nothin’ about rappin’, but if he’s singin’ about chicken soup, he can’t be all bad. It just goes to show ya, chicken soup is somethin’ special, no matter where you are or who you are.
So, next time you’re feelin’ poorly, or just want somethin’ warm and comforting, make yourself a pot of chicken soup. Don’t need no fancy recipe, just follow your heart and use what you got. And don’t forget to add a whole lot of love, that’s the most important ingredient of all. And you don’t need to worry whether you’re on Boston’s North Shore or anywhere else. Good chicken soup is good chicken soup.
Making good chicken soup ain’t hard, just takes time and a little bit of love. And that’s the truth, plain and simple.
And that’s all I gotta say about chicken soup. It ain’t complicated, just good food for good folks.
