Okay, so I finally got around to making those Cookie Monster cupcakes I kept seeing everywhere. Looked fun, thought I’d give it a shot myself.

Started off pretty standard. Just needed some basic cupcakes. I grabbed my usual vanilla recipe – nothing too complicated. Mixed the flour, sugar, eggs, butter, milk, all that jazz. Got the batter into the liners and popped them into the oven. Waited for them to bake and cool down completely. That waiting part is always tough when you just want to get to the decorating.
Next up was the frosting. This is where the ‘Cookie Monster’ part really starts. Made a simple buttercream – butter, powdered sugar, splash of milk, vanilla extract. Then came the blue food coloring. Getting that specific bright blue color wasn’t as easy as I thought. Added a bit, mixed, added some more. Took a few tries to get it looking right, not too pale, not too weirdly dark. My fingers definitely ended up blue in the process.
Alright, frosting done, cupcakes cool. Time to make them look hairy. I used one of those piping tips with multiple holes, supposed to look like grass or fur. Filled the piping bag with the blue frosting. This part was… an experience. Squeezing and pulling up quickly to make little tufts of fur. Some looked decent, others looked a bit like a blue blob. It’s definitely messier than it looks online. But hey, homemade, right? Covered the whole top of each cupcake.
Then, the eyes. I just bought some candy eyeballs from the store. Made life easier. While the frosting was still soft, I stuck two eyes onto each cupcake. Positioned them near the top. Suddenly, they started looking like little monsters.
The final touch, the most important bit: the cookie. What’s Cookie Monster without a cookie? I got some mini chocolate chip cookies. Broke a few in half, kinda messily. Then I carefully made a little slit in the frosting ‘mouth’ area below the eyes and tucked a cookie piece right in there. That really finished the look.
Honestly, they took a bit longer than expected, mostly fussing with the blue frosting and that piping tip. The kitchen counter looked like a blue dye bomb went off. But seeing them all lined up, looking like little blue monsters munching on cookies, was pretty satisfying. They weren’t perfect bakery quality, but they were fun. And they tasted good, which is what matters, I suppose. Disappeared pretty quick once people saw them.
