Hey there, you ever get stuck on them crossword puzzles? Me too, especially when they start talkin’ about fancy food. Like that one clue, “rich dessert sauce.” What in the world is that?
I tell ya, I was scratchin’ my head for a good while. My brain ain’t what it used to be. I just kept thinkin’ about the sweet things I like, and nothin’ was fittin’ in them little boxes.
Thinkin’ Hard, Thinkin’ Sweet
I started thinkin’ about all the good stuff we used to have.
- My grandma, bless her heart, used to make this thick, sweet sauce for her bread puddin’. We called it “sugar sauce” ’cause, well, it was mostly sugar. Would that fit? No, too many letters.
- Then there’s that stuff you pour on ice cream. Chocolate syrup, that’s it! But that don’t sound too “rich,” does it? It is good, though. I love me some chocolate syrup.
- My neighbor, she makes a mean butterscotch sauce. That stuff is like liquid gold. But is “butterscotch” the answer? I don’t know.
I was gettin’ nowhere fast. I even tried thinkin’ about the stuff they sell at the grocery store. You know, in them fancy jars. Nothin’. It’s like my brain was full of cobwebs.
More Sweet Treats, No Right Answers
I kept at it.
- There’s that red stuff, strawberry sauce. That’s good on cheesecake, but is it really a “rich” sauce? Not to me.
- And what about that white stuff? Whipped cream? Is that even a sauce? And “rich”? Maybe, if you use that heavy cream, you know. The kind that is real thick, not that watery stuff.
- One time, I had this fancy dessert at a restaurant. They called it “ganache.” Sounded like a sneeze to me, but it was tasty. Dark chocolate, real smooth. That might be rich, but it’s too fancy for this old brain.
I was startin’ to feel like I’d never figure it out. I was about to give up and just write in “sugar” and hope for the best. But then, it hit me, like a bolt of lightnin’.
A Sweet Solution, Maybe?
What about caramel? It’s sweet, it’s sticky, it’s definitely rich. And it fits in them boxes! Seven letters, just right.
Caramel is made with sugar, you know. You cook it up ’til it gets all brown and gooey. It’s good on ice cream, on cake, even in coffee. Some folks even put a little salt in it, that’s the new way to do it they say. Makes it taste even better, they say. I might try that some day. Maybe not.
Could that be it? Could “caramel” be the “rich dessert sauce” they’re lookin’ for? I think it might be. It’s gotta be, right?
I wrote it in, real careful. And you know what? It fit perfectly! I think I got it right. I sure hope so. This crossword puzzle is makin’ my head spin. But at least I got that one clue figured out. Now, what’s a five-letter word for “happy”? Hmmm…
Sometimes, these things have lots of answers, you know. Like that “rich dessert” one, could be “torte” too, I reckon. That’s a fancy cake. But “caramel” feels right for this “rich dessert sauce” clue, don’t it?
Well, I’m gonna keep workin’ on this puzzle. Maybe I’ll have another piece of pie while I think. With some of that caramel sauce on top, of course!
