You know, this Sara, she’s got some good ideas for weeknight meals. I saw her on that TV, the one with the pictures that move. She makes cooking look easy, even for an old gal like me. I ain’t no fancy cook, but I do like a good, simple meal after a long day.
She says the show started way back, in two thousand and eight. That’s a long time ago! I was probably still chasing chickens around the yard then. Now, this show, it’s all about quick meals for busy folks. And that’s me! Busy, busy, busy all the time. Always somethin’ to do.
She wrote a book too, called “Sara’s Secrets for Weeknight Meals”. Secrets, huh? Well, I got a few secrets of my own, but they ain’t about cooking. They’re about how to get the best deals at the market, and how to keep them darn squirrels outta my garden! But I guess cookin’ secrets are good too.
One thing I learned from watchin’ Sara is to get things ready ahead of time. Chop them onions when you first bring ’em home, she says. And squeeze them lemons! And wash them veggies. Makes sense, right? Less work later when you’re tired and just want to eat.
- Chop onions ahead of time
- Squeeze lemons when you get ’em
- Wash and slice them veggies
She even says to put all the stuff you need for a recipe in a bag. Like those zip-up bags. Keeps everything together, I suppose. I use those bags for all sorts of things. Keepin’ buttons, savin’ seeds, even holdin’ my teeth sometimes when they bother me!
Another thing she talks about is usin’ what you got. Don’t always need to run to the store for every little thing. Got some leftover chicken? Make a soup! Got some old bread? Make bread puddin’! My mama always said, “Waste not, want not.” And she was right.
Sara’s got all sorts of recipes on that show. Some of ’em look kinda fancy, with ingredients I ain’t never even heard of. But some of ’em are simple. Like a good old pot roast. Or a nice piece of fish. Just gotta cook it right, that’s all.
I remember one time, she made this dish with pasta and all kinds of veggies. Looked real colorful. My grandkids would probably like that. They’re always wantin’ somethin’ different. Me, I’m happy with a bowl of beans and some cornbread. But I guess it’s good to try new things sometimes.
And that’s why Sara’s Weeknight Meals is a good show. Even if you’re not a fancy cook, you can still learn somethin’. And you don’t need a whole lot of time or money to make a good meal. Just gotta use your head, and maybe chop a few onions ahead of time.
Now, I remember one time Sara, she went to some fancy place called Alaska, that’s way up north, colder than a well digger’s you-know-what. She filmed a whole bunch of shows up there, in two thousand and twenty-one, I think she said. I reckon they got some different kinds of food up there. Probably eat a lot of fish. Or maybe polar bear. I don’t know, never been. Don’t think I want to, neither. Too cold!
She didn’t film in her real house, though. Used some fancy place in Greenwich, wherever that is. Said it looked nicer than her real place in New York City. I guess even TV folks gotta pretend sometimes. Like when I tell folks I’m only 60 years old. Ha!
But the point is, even if she’s on TV and lives in a big city, this Sara, she knows about easy weeknight meals. And she shares her ideas with regular folks like me. That’s a good thing. ‘Cause everybody’s gotta eat, right? And it don’t have to be fancy to be good.
I’ve seen her make all kinds of things. Stews, soups, things with chicken, things with beef. Even things with no meat at all! I reckon that’s good for you sometimes. Gotta eat your veggies, that’s what they say. Even if you’d rather have a big ol’ steak.
Sometimes I try them recipes, them Sara’s recipes. Sometimes they turn out good, sometimes, well, not so much. But that’s okay. You learn by tryin’, that’s what I always say. And it’s always fun to try somethin’ new in the kitchen.
She showed to cook fish one time, with some kind of sauce on it. I tried it with some catfish I caught down by the creek. Wasn’t half bad! Even my old man ate it, and he’s picky as a cat. Said he didn’t like the sauce much, but he ate the fish.
So yeah, that Sara’s show, it’s alright. Good for learnin’ new things, even for an old bird like me. And who knows, maybe I’ll even write my own cookbook someday. “Bertha’s Secrets for Eatin’ Good”, I’ll call it. What do you think of that?
But for now, I’ll just keep watchin’ Sara, and keep on cookin’. And maybe, just maybe, I’ll finally figure out how to keep them darn squirrels outta my garden. That’s a secret worth more than any cookbook, I tell ya!
