This here thing, soup crocks, you know? It’s what we use to eat our soup, stew, and all them good things. I seen a lot of these bowls in my day, some fancy, some plain. But they all do the job, right? Hold the soup, keep it warm.
Now, them fancy ones, they call ’em “porcelain”. White as a sheet, and they say it’s strong. Stronger than regular bowls, they say. That’s good, I reckon. Don’t want no bowl breaking on ya when you got hot soup in it. I remember one time, my neighbor had one of these bowls and she dropped it. But it did not break. That’s a good bowl right there!
They say this porcelain, it’s good for fancy dinners. You know, when the big shots come over. We don’t have them kind of dinners much, but it’s nice to know they got bowls for it. They call it a “luxury item”. Sounds like something rich folks have. But really a bowl is a bowl right?
- White as snow, these porcelain ones.
- Strong, they say, won’t break easy.
- For fancy dinners and such.
- A luxury item is what they call it.
Then there’s these other ones, “stoneware”. Heard of it? Kinda rough, not all smooth like the white ones. And they say it soaks up stuff, like water and soup. They say it can be stained. Don’t sound too good, does it? Imagine your bowl smelling like old beef stew forever! You gotta put some special stuff on it, they say, to keep it from soaking everything up. They call it “glazed”. They need to be properly glazed!
This glazing, it’s like a coating, I guess. Keeps the bowl from being all porous. That’s a word they use, “porous”. Means it’s got little holes in it, like a sponge. You don’t want your soup bowl to be like a sponge, do ya? Soak up all the flavor and leave you with nothin’ but a dirty bowl.
So, you gotta watch out for that with these stoneware bowls. Make sure they’re glazed good. Otherwise, you’ll be sorry. Stinky bowls are no good, no sir. Best to avoid unless they are glazed.
- Stoneware, it’s rough.
- Soaks up stuff, they say.
- Can get stained and stinky.
- Needs to be glazed, or it’s no good.
Then you got your regular bowls, ceramic, they call ’em. Not as fancy as the white ones, not as rough as the stoneware. Just regular bowls. They do the job. We use ’em all the time. They ain’t nothin’ special, but they hold the soup, and that’s what matters.
Then you got those glass ones, can you believe it? Glass bowls for soup? Seems crazy to me, but they exist. I would not know what to do with a glass bowl. Seems like a glass would break too easily.
So, when you’re picking out your soup crocks, you got choices. Fancy white ones, rough stoneware ones, regular ceramic, or even glass ones. Just remember what I said about that stoneware. Make sure it’s glazed! And the porcelain is good if you are eating with important people. And the ceramic is good for every day eating. And I don’t know about those glass ones. Be careful!
At the end of the day, what you want is a good solid bowl that can take the heat. Doesn’t matter if it is white, brown, or whatever, so long as it holds the soup and doesn’t leave a mess. Because nobody wants to be cleaning up soup all day long.
You can get these soup crocks at all the usual places. Just make sure you inspect it real good before buying. Look for cracks or chips. Make sure it feels solid in your hands. You don’t want no flimsy bowl that will break first time you use it. If you want to get one of those fancy porcelain ones, make sure it is real pure white. Like I said, white as snow!
And don’t be afraid to ask questions! If you don’t know what kind of bowl it is, just ask. Better to ask and know than to buy something you regret later. Especially if it is stoneware. Make sure it is glazed! You don’t want a bowl that smells like old soup forever.
There you have it. That is all I know about these soup bowls. I hope this is useful information to you. And remember to always be careful when handling hot soup! No need to burn yourself over a bowl of soup.
