Okay, so let me tell you about my little adventure with frozen seafood. I wanted to cook something different, but I didn’t have a big budget or time to use fresh ingredients.
I went to the Walmart near my place because I heard that their Sam’s Choice brand was pretty good. So many options and brands, it spent me almost half an hour to make decisions. Then I picked up some frozen fish and shellfish, they looked pretty decent, and the prices were definitely easier on my wallet than the fresh stuff.
I remembered reading somewhere that frozen seafood could be just as good as fresh, especially since it’s frozen right after being caught. And I found out that some fish, like cod and tilapia, freeze really well.
Here’s what I grabbed:
- A bag of Gorton’s Golden Crusted Fish Fillets: I heard this brand is good, so I wanted to give it a try. It looks so delicious, 100% Whole Fillets.
- A bag of frozen shrimp: A classic, can’t go wrong with shrimp, right? I planned to use these for a simple stir-fry later.
- Some frozen mussels: I love mussels, and these were way cheaper than the fresh ones. I thought I could make a nice pasta with them.
Cooking Time
First, I thawed the seafood in the fridge overnight. It is very important. I didn’t want to rush it and end up with a watery mess.
For the fish fillets, I just followed the instructions on the package and baked them in the oven. They turned out pretty crispy and tasted quite good, actually! Better than I expected.
The shrimp were super easy. I sauteed them with some garlic, vegetables, and a bit of soy sauce. Quick and tasty.
The mussels took a bit more effort. I cooked them in a white wine sauce with some herbs and garlic. I love the smell of mussels, and the flavors were great, but honestly, I think fresh mussels might have a slight edge in terms of texture.
My Thoughts
Overall, I’m pretty happy with how everything turned out. Using frozen seafood was a real time-saver and definitely saved me some money. It is much cheaper than fresh food and the quality was surprisingly good. I’ll definitely be buying frozen again. It’s convenient, affordable, and you can still make some really tasty meals with it.
If you’re on the fence about trying frozen seafood, I’d say go for it. Just do a little research on which types freeze well, and you might be surprised at what you can create in your kitchen!
