Okay, so I’ve been trying to figure out more gluten-free options when I eat out, especially for something quick and comforting like soup. Panera Bread comes to mind because they’re everywhere and have a reputation for fresher ingredients. But soup often has hidden gluten, you know? Thickeners, croutons, barley… it’s a minefield.

I decided I needed to get to the bottom of it. Do they actually have any soups that are safe for someone avoiding gluten? My first step was just heading over there during a lunch break. I figured seeing the menu and maybe asking someone directly would be the clearest way to find out.
Went inside, looked up at the big menu board. Lots of tempting soups listed, but zero information about gluten right there. Not surprising, really. Those boards are always more about pictures and prices. So, I got in line and waited my turn.
When I got to the counter, I asked the person taking orders straight up: “Do you have any gluten-free soup options?” They were pretty nice about it, didn’t seem annoyed or anything. They actually seemed to know what I was talking about, which isn’t always the case when you ask about dietary restrictions.
They mentioned that Panera has official allergen information available, which is good. They told me which soups are generally made without gluten ingredients. It wasn’t a huge list, mind you, but it was something.
Here’s what I learned they typically offer:
- Turkey Chili: This one seems to be a regular fixture that’s listed as gluten-conscious.
- Summer Corn Chowder: This is seasonal, so it’s not always around, but when it is, it’s another option made without gluten.
Important point they made, though: They were very clear about the kitchen environment. They prepare everything in a shared space, so cross-contamination is a real possibility. They use the term “gluten conscious” rather than “gluten-free” for this reason. That’s something you definitely need to keep in mind depending on your sensitivity level.
So, I decided to give the Turkey Chili a try that day. I made sure to mention the gluten issue again when I ordered, just to be safe. They gave me the soup without any bread or croutons, of course. It was actually pretty decent! Warming, flavorful, and seemed okay for my needs.
It’s not a massive selection, but it’s good to know there are at least a couple of possibilities if you’re craving soup and end up at Panera. Just remember to always ask and mention your needs when ordering, since ingredients and preparation can sometimes change, and be aware of that cross-contamination risk. That was my little investigation, anyway. Hope sharing this helps someone else out!
