Okay, so the other night I decided I wanted to do things a bit differently. Usually, I just bring the big soup pot straight to the table, you know? Easy peasy. But this time, I thought, let’s try using that fancy soup tureen I got ages ago and hardly ever use. It came with a big ladle, too.

Getting Started
First thing, I had to dig it out of the back of the cupboard. Gave it a good wash, the tureen and the ladle, because dust, right? It’s a pretty solid thing, ceramic I think. Nice weight to it.
While the soup was simmering – just a simple vegetable soup, nothing too wild – I thought about warming the tureen. Someone told me once that helps keep the soup hot longer. So, I carefully poured some hot water from the kettle into it, let it sit for a few minutes, then poured it out and dried the inside. Felt like I was being proper fancy.
The Transfer
Soup’s ready. Smelling good. Now, the slightly tricky part. Getting the soup from the cooking pot into this tureen thingy. This is where the ladle came in handy, obviously. It’s bigger than my usual serving spoon, deeper too. I started scooping the soup, ladle by ladle, into the tureen. Took a few trips back and forth.
- Careful not to spill on the counter.
- Made sure to get the chunky bits, not just broth.
- The ladle actually made it quite easy, less mess than trying to pour from the heavy pot.
Once it was full, or full enough anyway, I put the lid on the tureen. It looked quite impressive sitting there on the counter, I have to admit. Much nicer than the battered cooking pot.
Serving it Up
Carried the whole thing to the dining table. It has these little handles on the side, which helped. Placed it right in the center. Looked good, felt good.
Dinner time. Everyone’s gathered ’round. I lifted the lid – nice little puff of steam came out, soup was still piping hot. Success! Then I used the same big ladle to serve the soup into everyone’s bowls. It dished out perfect portions, one or two scoops per bowl depending on how hungry people were. Felt quite elegant, doing it that way instead of passing a big, hot pot around.
Honestly, it made the meal feel a bit more special. Just that simple act of using the tureen and ladle. The soup stayed warm throughout the meal thanks to the lid and the thick ceramic. Clean up wasn’t too bad either, just the tureen and ladle into the dishwasher.

Will I use it every time? Probably not, let’s be real. Sometimes speed is key. But for a weekend meal, or when folks are over? Yeah, I think I’ll be pulling out the soup tureen and ladle more often. Makes a simple soup feel like a bit of an event.
